Zoo Zajac closes

Feb 16, 2025

The world's largest pet shop, Zoo Zajac in Duisburg, Germany, has to close for good. Despite an intensive search for an investor and a stable model for continued operation, it was unfortunately not possible to find a solution for the continuation of business operations after filing for insolvency in December, reports insolvency administrator Sarah Wolf from Anchor Rechtsanwälte.

‘The public speculation about the future of the location of Zoo Zajac GmbH's retail business has made our search for an investor considerably more difficult,’ explained Wolf. The site had even been sold to a property company before the insolvency application was filed, as the management of Zoo Zajac itself learnt from the press in January.

A sale with discounts starting at 20 per cent will now start on 17 February, explained Kathi Geven, Managing Director of Zoo Zajac GmbH. At the same time, preparations have already been made to ensure that the hard-to-sell animals are placed in good hands. To this end, contact was made some time ago with a large network of animal parks and zoos.
