The Germans love pets

Jun 10, 2014
28 million pets (not including ornamental fish and terrarium pets) live in over a third of German households, according to a new survey conducted by the ZZF and IVH at the Interzoo show in Nuremberg.

The Germans’ favourite pet is still the cat. A total of 11.5 million cats live in 19 per cent of households. Dogs come second, with 6.9 million dogs in 14 per cent of households, followed by 6.1 million small animals in 6 per cent of households and 3.4 million cage birds in 3 per cent of households. 2 million aquariums and 1.7 million garden ponds are home to fish (4 per cent of all households respectively), while terrarium pets are kept in 800 000 terrariums, equivalent to a distribution in 1 per cent of German households.
