Croatian company Tvornica Dobre Hrane has opened the first factory for dry pet food in the country following a 22 million kuna ($3.3 million/2.9 million euro) investment, the government said.
The factory spreads on 1,000 square metres in the industrial zone of the northern city of Virovitica, the government said in a statement on Friday.
Out of the total investment, 8 million kuna came from the company's own funds, another 8 million kuna was a loan from the Croatian development bank HBOR, and the remainder was secured by EU grants.
"It is estimated that there are some 2 million pets in Croatia who need 60,000 tonnes of food. So far, there hasn't been a factory in Croatia that can produce it and we had to import 100% of it," the majority owner of Tvornica Dobre Hrane, Marko Skrablin, said in the statement, adding that the factory will produce 10,000 tonnes of pet food annually.
The factory will employ 30 people by the end of the year, with almost all of its raw materials coming from local producers, Skrablin said.
