Simmons Pet Food, Inc. announced plans to close its wet pet food manufacturing facility in Pennsauken by late 2020. The company said it made the decision “to optimize its operations.”
The private-label manufacturer said it considered upgrading the plant, but the costs would be prohibitive for Simmons. Instead, it will transition canned pet food production from Pennsauken to a high-speed line at its Emporia, Kansas facility over the next year.
"Simmons is committed to achieving world-class customer service and exceptional product quality,” said David Jackson, chief operating officer of Simmons Foods. "This production shift is a necessary step in advancing our pet food operations strategy.”
The company reported it will provide support resources, such as career fairs, severance pay and other benefits, for employees to make a smooth transition once the facility is officially closed. For those at the Pennsauken facility willing to relocate, Simmons will offer positions at its other locations.
“Business decisions that impact the lives and livelihoods of our team members are difficult. We are committed to doing all we can to provide affected team members with resources and support during the transition and closure of the plant in Pennsauken,” Jackson added.
