New research indicates that two of Europe’s strongest private label retailers, Lidl and Aldi, are growing faster than their biggest competitors. LZ Retailytics reports that sales at both retailers climbed by more than 6% in 2017. Lidl’s parent company, Schwarz Group, remains the largest grocery retailer in Europe, posting sales of more than 106bn euros in 2017.
Aldi, the third largest grocer, posted sales of almost 62bn euros. Carrefour continues as the second largest grocery retailer with sales of nearly 65bn euros, but its sales declined slightly last year. All of the top ten retailers have annual sales of more than 30bn euros. Merger activity this year, such as the proposed merger between Sainsbury’s and ASDA, is likely to have an impact on next year’s rankings.
