Mars intends to invest a billion US dollars in climate protection, its CEO Grant Reid has revealed. The company also aims to support the fight against resource scarcity and poverty. "A billion dollars is a large sum, but I think the real message is that we are taking a stand," said Reid, unveiling the new sustainability plan to the Financial Times.
Under this initiative Mars aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 27 per cent by 2025 and by as much as 67 per cent by 2050. Wind turbines are expected to provide the power for production plants in the future, as is already the case in the USA and Great Britain, according to the company. The plan is for wind and solar energy to be able to deliver power in another nine countries by 2018.
