Aldi announced plans to enter the Chinese market through an online offer and could also have stores in the country by the end of 2017. Aldi said it will launch an online store in the second quarter of the year, which will offer a “carefully selected range of everyday grocery items”. It plans to open physical stores in China later in 2017.
This will be the first time Aldi has entered a country starting with ecommerce before establishing physical stores. The German retail chain will supply the stores from its Australian subsidiary, taking advantage of existing distribution networks and the Chinese demand for Australian products: "We know there is a strong demand among Chinese consumers for Australian manufactured products and our goal is to provide a competitively priced alternative for shoppers seeking quality groceries,” says the Aldi spokeswoman.
