Central Garden sales decrease

May 16, 2015
Central Garden & Pet Company, the leading producer of products for the lawn and garden and pet supplies markets, has announced financial results for its fiscal second quarter. The company reported second-quarter net sales of $497.6 mio, a decrease of $4 mio or one per cent, compared with $501.6 mio in the second quarter of the previous year.
The company's second-quarter operating income was $50 mio, compared with operating income of $44.8 mio in the second quarter of 2014, an increase of $5.2 mio. Sales and general and administrative expenses as a percentage of sales improved to 20.1 per cent of sales versus 20.5 per cent in the same period a year ago.

Pet segment on the rise

Second-quarter net sales for the pet segment increased $4.7 mio or two per cent from the same period a year ago to $221.5 mio, due in large part to sales of other manufacturers' products and higher professional revenues.

Partially offsetting the gains were lower wild bird feed and dog and cat revenues. Sales of other manufacturers' products increased primarily due to increased distribution and higher sales of dog food, treats and supplies, says the company. The pet segment's branded product sales were $168.4 mio in the second quarter of 2015 and sales of other manufacturers' products were $53.1 mio.
