Promanimal, the French trade body promoting the pets market, has just released the 2010 market figures.
In France, 49% of households keep a pet. Dogs, with 41%, and cats, with 40%, feed the market value. Growthwise, the market went from €3.1 billion ($4.5 billion) in 2006 to €3.8 billion ($5.5) in 2010, RSP VAT inc.; between 2009 and 2010, cats were the sole responsible for the overall value growth (+2%), other species expenses proving stable (except wild birds and terraria, recording a strong growth from modest levels).
As far as retailing is concerned, food stores still account for 53%, followed at distance by garden centres (15%), veterinarians (11%), farm stores (10%) and pet stores (5%).
